Stochastic optimization of retirement portfolio asset allocations and withdrawals

چکیده

Stochastic optimization identifies the asset allocation that minimizes the probability of exhausting the retirement portfolio, thereby minimizing risk, from unmanaged (constant) and optimally managed withdrawals over the retirement life span. Optimal equity compositions and minimized probabilities of prematurely exhausting the portfolio increase with higher withdrawal rates and earlier retirements with both managed and unmanaged withdrawals. However, optimal withdrawal management from optimally managed portfolios reduces the sensitivity of premature portfolio exhaustion to higher initial withdrawal rates or earlier retirements, thereby reducing the increase in the risk of exhausting the portfolio necessary to support the improved lifestyles from higher withdrawals, longer retirements, or both. © 2008 Academy of Financial Services. Market Risk, Mortality Risk, and Sustainable Retirement Asset Allocation: A Downside Risk Perspective

Despite its clear importance, there is no consensus on the optimal asset allocation strategy for retirement investors of varying age, gender, and risk tolerance. This study analyzes the allocation question by focusing on the downside risks that result from the joint uncertainty over investment returns and life expectancy. Using a new analytical approach, we show that concentrating on the severi...

Efficient Post-retirement Asset Allocation

To examine post-retirement asset allocation, an extension to the classic Markowitz risk-return framework is suggested. Assuming that retirees make constant (real dollar) annual withdrawals from their portfolios, reward and risk measures are defined to be the mean and standard deviation of wealth remaining at end of life. Asset returns and time of death are both treated as random variables. Assu...

Generating effective defined-contribution pension plan using simulation optimization approach

This paper presents an optimization approach to analyze the problems of portfolio selection for longterm investments, taking into consideration the specific target replacement ratio for defined-contribution (DC) pension scheme; the purpose is to generate an effective multi-period asset allocation that reaches an amount matching the target liability at retirement date and reduce the downside ris...

Optimal Asset Allocation under Forward Exponential Performance Criteria

This work presents a novel concept in stochastic optimization, namely, the notion of forward performance. As an application, we analyze a portfolio management problem with exponential criteria. Under minimal model assumptions we explicitly construct the forward performance process and the associated optimal wealth and asset allocations. For various model parameters, we recover a range of invest...

Towards a Dynamic Asset Allocation Framework for Target Retirement Funds: Getting Rid of the Dogma in Lifecycle Investing

Lifecycle funds offered to retirement plan participants gradually roll down their exposure to stocks while approaching the target date of retirement. This movement away from equities and towards less volatile assets like bonds and cash is done following an asset allocation principle which emphasizes growth of portfolio in the initial years and preservation in the later years. We show that such ...
